Isla Solarte:
The History
Isla Solarte is one of the most natural and historically rich islands in Bocas del Toro. It is almost entirely covered in thick rainforest and is surrounded by shallow coral reefs and mangrove forests. Isla Solarte is most famous for the area known as Hospital Point, which is just a few minutes from our bungalows.
Hospital Point, now a popular snorkeling and diving spot, was once a Hospital complex built by the United Fruit Company in 1901. The hospital’s mission was to keep the workforce of the United Fruit Company healthy so they could continue to farm the banana plantations. Yellow Fever, Malaria, and other tropical diseases were rampant during this time. The Hospital closed in 1920 and today the area has been reclaimed by the jungle.
Jungles Teeming with Life
Our Isla Solarte Neighborhood
Isla Solarte has no roads or any basic infrastructure like electricity or running water. The only stores on the island are run by Indigenous locals which carry basic necessities. There is a small school up to 6th grade in the nearby Indigenous community called Solarte Uno. Solarte has a local population of less than 200 people, the majority of which are Ngobe, the indigenous group that is native to the Archipelago. The other inhabitants of Solarte are expats, many of whom run Eco style off-grid tourist accommodations or own private residences.
